Organization History
The US Army Corps of Engineers was established under the authority of the Continental Congress. In 1775, they assigned two sets of one chief engineer and two assistants and placed one in the Grand Army and another in a separate department. During the revolutionary war, General Washington was tasked to gather an engineering force in six months to form a Corps of Engineers. General Washington’s mission served as a catalyst that aided the USACE in educating engineers and officers to assist the US Army. The Corps was tasked to complete various objectives through the establishment of the United States’ westward expansion. The USACE was called upon by local, state, and private organizations to aid them in assembling roads, canals, and harbors for the progressive movement in national expansion.
